What to buy, what to skip

Glove buying comes down to two questions: what are you hitting, and how much padding stands between your hands and it. Get those right and any glove in this collection will serve you for years.

Ounces, honestly explained

Glove weight is padding, not difficulty. Heavier gloves (14–16oz) protect your hands and whoever you train with; lighter gloves (6–10oz) are faster but transfer more impact to your knuckles and wrists. Beginners almost always buy too light — while your fist is still learning to land square, more padding is protection you want, not a handicap. A rough guide: 6–10oz for cardio boxing and speed work, 10–14oz for regular bag and pad training, 14–16oz for partner work.

Match the glove to the training

For fitness boxing and bag sessions, the training gloves (6–12oz) are light, breathable and easy on-off. For all-round home training, the 8–14oz range covers bag work, pads and conditioning in one pair. The professional 10–16oz gloves and the unisex professional pair ($80) carry denser padding and firmer wrist support for heavier, more frequent sessions — buy these when boxing is your main training, not your cardio. For Sanda and Muay Thai work, the dedicated gloves are cut for the clinch and kick-checking those styles involve.

Wraps go underneath. Always.

No glove replaces hand wraps. Wraps ($19 for a 9.8ft pair) hold the small bones of your hand and wrist in line under impact — the glove protects the surface, the wrap protects the structure. They also absorb sweat that would otherwise shorten your gloves' life. Budget for them with your first pair, not after your first sore wrist.

What to skip

A second pair “for variety.” Gloves aren't rotated like running shoes — one well-chosen pair, dried out between sessions, will outlast the enthusiasm of most home boxing setups. Skip anything marketed on looks alone: the stitching, the wrist closure and the padding density are the whole product. The colorway isn't hitting anything.
